Physiological processes can be difficult to visualize, so when artist Gwen Oulman Brennan wanted to visually raise awareness of breathing she hand cut silk ovals the size of the inhaling human mouth. She cut 28,800 ovals, the number of breaths an average person takes in a day. Stringing these together by hand, she created a 13’ long metaphor of a day’s breathing. The 2010 Craft Alliance Artist in Residence is currently working on exploring value through a variety of materials including bone and sterling silver.
